 CHCA NEWS AND EVENTS

SATURDAY, JUNE 26- FUNDING APPROVED FOR NEW GLENVAR LIBRARY

On Thursday, June 24, the Roanoke Board of Supervisiors approved approximately 6 million dollars in funding for a new Glenvar library.  Learn more at http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/251247.

Charlie Wells and Angela Hughes were recipients of the 2010 Outstanding Volunteer Award.  They were recognied at the 2010 CHCA Party-in-the-Park/Annual Meeting.

SATURDAY, JUNE 19- PARTY-IN-THE-PARK AND ANNUAL MEETING ON JUNE 11 ENJOYED BY MANY

The CHCA Board thanks everyone who participated in the annual Party-In-The-Park picnic and Annual Business Meeting.  Residents from across the neighborhood, including quite a few kids, showed up to meet their neighbors, enjoy good food, and learn more about emerging issues in Cherokee Hills and The Oaks.  Special thanks to Stephanie Butler, CHCA Secretary, for her hard work in coordinating the event.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 2- PARTY-IN-THE-PARK AND ANNUAL MEETING SCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY, JUNE 11, 2010 (5:30 PM)

Please join us at the annual CHCA Party-In-The-Park and annual business meeting.  This year's event will take place at 5:30 PM on Friday, June 11 in the park.  The CHCA will provide chicken, chips, lemonade, and kool-aid. Please bring a side dish.  Kids activities will also be provided.  We recommend that you bring lawn chair(s) or a blanket.

The business meeting will follow the picnic (probably at around 6:30 pm).  In additional to voting on the officers for the upcoming year, CHCA members will approve the budget and discuss emerging neighborhood issues.  Anyone interested in running for an officer position should contact Scott Sprunger at
s_sprunger@msn.com or 380-4029.

TUESDAY, JUNE 1- UPDATE ON SEWER PIPE PROJECT IN CHEROKEE HILLS

We received the following update about the Sewer Project planned for the Cherokee Hills 5000-5200 block.

Residents along both sides of Cherokee Hills Drive between Teepee Lane and Sundance Road have the option of buying into the sewer line.  The cost is a $7,500 flat fee.  Residents that buy-in also have to pay to have their own sewer system connected to the main line.  The sewer line will be installed along the odd-numbered side of Cherokee Hills Drive.

For more information contact Greg Reed, Director of Engineering Services, Western Virginia Water Authority, at 853-5468.

SUNDAY, MAY 16- BLACK BEAR ACTIVITY IN CHEROKEE HILLS

I have received two reports of bear activity in Cherokee Hills over the past 2 days.  The first report was from a resident in the lower section of Cherokee Hills Drive.  The bear damaged bird feeders, upset a garbage can, etc.  The second report was from a resident who was walking the hiking trails behind the park (this resident reported seeing what was believed to be a mother bear and cub.)

Please use caution and be aware of your surroundings particularly in the evenings.  Mother bears can be very protective of their cubs and you do not want to find yourself between a mother and her cub.

Also, please avoid feeding any bears that you may encounter.  Feeding bears can make them reliant on our neighborhood for food and/or make them more likely to come onto our properties for food.  Bears are a natural part of our reality in Cherokee Hills.  Let's do our best to avoid creating (or contributing to) a potential problem.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 5- MARK YOUR CALENDARS- TWO IMPORTANT CHCA EVENTS

Community Yard Sale (June 5)
On Saturday, June 5, the CHCA will coordinate a community yard sale.  Set-ups outside of individual homes is fine.  The association will pay for the marketing.  If you've thought about offering a spring/summer yard sale, then please join us in this event!

Party-In-The-Park/Annual Meeting (June 11)
Each summer the CHCA provides a Party-In-The-Park in conjunction with our annual CHCA business meeting.  This year's event will take place at 5:30 PM on Friday, June 11.  The CHCA will provide hot dogs, chips, lemonade, and kool-aid. Please bring a side dish.  Kids activities will also be provided.  The business meeting will follow the picnic.  In additional to voting on the officers for the upcoming year, CHCA members will approve the budget and discuss emerging neighborhood issues.
Anyone interested in running for an officer position should contact Scott Sprunger at
s_sprunger@msn.com or 380-4029.

SUNDAY, APRIL 25- SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY REPORTED IN CHEROKEE HILLS AND THE OAKS

We have received reports from six Cherokee Hills residents [on Cherokee Hills Drive and Arrowhead Drive (The Oaks)] about a woman who has showed up at residents' doors late at night saying that she has run out of gas and requesting help.  In at least one instance she said she was from Elliston.  She usually has at least one child (boy) with her.  In one instance she had 2 boys with her (between ages of 9-12).  The car has been reported to be an older model dark-colored car. In some instances, residents have given the woman gas and in other instances they have given her a few dollars.

Although no crime has been reported associated with these late night requests for help, they have occurred multiple times in a very short period of time (a few on the same night).

At least one resident reported this to the police and is waiting to file a report.  If we receive specific guidelines from the police then I will forward them to you. In the meantime, please consider these recommendations if someone approaches you in this way:
----Do not let anyone into your house.
----Offer to call the police so that the police can assist them.
----Try to get the license plate number of the car.
Also, if you (or someone you know in Cherokee Hills) has been approached by a woman and/or 2 boys requesting assistance like this, then please contact me so that we can better gauge the scope of these late night visits.

REMINDER:  Our CHCA email list reaches approximately 60% of the neighborhood.  40% either don't have email or have chosen not to share it.  So, if you know anyone who might not be receiving these notices, please pass along this important information.

THURSDAY, APRIL 22- UPDATE FROM THE CHCA COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP WEEKEND

If you've been to the park in the past few days or if you've driven by the main sign on Cherokee Hills Drive, you can see clear evidence of the time and energy that was shared by neighborhood volunteers this past Saturday during our annual Community Clean Up Weekend!

We want to recognize the following individuals for their contributions during Community Clean Up Weekend. If you know anyone on this list (listed alphabetically), then please take a few moments this week to thank them for giving of their time to beautify and improve our neighborhood. (If we've accidently left anyone off this list- please accept our apologies!)

--Stephanie Butler
--Stover Dalton
--Barry Garst
--Wayne Garst
--Ann Genova
--Matt Heaton
--Les Meadows
--Thomas Newcomb
--Todd Peters
--Chris and Cindy Poulton
--Greg Spangler
--Donna and Vaughn Williams

We also want to recognize Lisa Yagle and Matt Gart (Yagle Nursery in Elliston) for donating the landscape plants for the area around the main Cherokee Hills Sign.

The contributions of our volunteers and donors impacts all of us, not only because they provide a more attractive and safe living environment, but also because volunteers/donors keep our annual CHCA dues low because we don't have to pay for these goods and services out of our budget.  This is significant, considering the fact that CHCA dues have not been increased in more than 10 years!

So, out of roughly 185 homes in Cherokee Hills/The Oaks (a few of which are vacant), 14 neighbors volunteered, which is about 8%.  Although 14 volunteers might seem low, it represents a 200% increase over the number of volunteers who were involved in 2009.  So, we are making progress and people are getting involved.  It's exciting to see what we can accomplish together.

There's still much work to be done.  If you're interested in helping out with other CHCA community projects, please contact Les Meadows at 380-2256.

FRIDAY, MARCH 12- DEADLINE TO SUBMIT GLENVAR COMMUNITY PLAN SURVEY IS MARCH 15

If you haven't already completed a Glenvar Community Plan Survey, then please take a few minutes to do so.  The survey will close on Monday, March 15.  To access the survey, go to:  http://tinyurl.com/GlenvarSurveyYou can pick up a hard-copy of the survey at the Glenvar Library or the Roanoke County Administration Center.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?  The Glenvar Community Plan was initiated to study development and redevelopment issues along West Main Street in anticipation of the widenting of West Main Street and the proposal intermodel facility in Montgomery County.  The Glenvar Community Plan will also study community facility needs, environmental resources/constraints, was well as outdoor recreation resources.  The Plan is expected to be adopted later in 2010.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2010- PROGRESSIVE DINNER PLANNED FOR FEBRUARY 20 HAS BEEN MOVED TO THE SPRING

The progressive dinner coordinated by Chris and Cindy Poulton and originally scheduled for February 20, 2010, has been moved to the spring.

Are you new to progressive dining?  A progressive dinner is a dinner party in which each successive course is prepared and eaten at the residence of a different host. Think of it as dinner with travel. The purpose of these dinners is to increase our sense of community by opening homes, sharing food, and getting to know each other in one area of Cherokee Hills at a time.  Specifically, dinners would be sponsored by a street (or adjacent streets).  Over time, 100% of the streets in Cherokee Hills would be involved.  Given the travel component to these dinner parties; having a street host an entire party will help as we move from course to course.  It will also help acquaint neighbors from other areas of Cherokee Hills with each street.

Look for more information about the new date/time of this CHCA program in future CHCA newsletters and emails.

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 15- GLENVAR COMMUNITY PLAN SURVEY NOW AVAILABLE FROM ROANOKE COUNTY

ACT NOW!  Now's the time to let Roanoke County know your opinions about the future of development and zoning in Glenvar.  Complete the survey today!! The Glenvar Community Plan Survey is now available at: http://tinyurl.com/GlenvarSurvey.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?  Once adopted, the Glenvar Community Plan will become a part of the Roanoke County Comprehensive Plan. The Comprehensive Plan is a general, long-range policy and implementation guide for decisions regarding growth and development. The Glenvar Community Plan will ultimately help guide the future of your community.

WHEN WILL RESULTS BE AVAILABLE?  County staff will be compiling the results of this survey for incorporation into the Glenvar Community Plan around mid-to-late January 2010. The results will be made available on the Glenvar Community Plan website (http://tinyurl.com/GlenvarPlan).

WEDNESDAY, AUG 19- OVERVIEW OF NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY PROGRAM CONDUCTED ON AUGUST 5

On August 5th, the Cherokee Hills Community Association hosted a program and community meeting on neighborhood safety at the Glenvar Library.  Officer Eric Orange, Community Policing Coordinator for the Roanoke County Police Department, presented a dynamic program which included tips and recommendations for protecting personal property and increasing safety/security in our neighborhood.

Key points that Officer Orange shared include:

 ·    Do not leave valuables where they can be seen and always lock the doors/windows to your home and vehicles. (Most “break-ins” in Cherokee Hills have occurred when cars were left unlocked.)

 ·    Keep yourself from being victimized.  Follow the recommended home safety tips.  (See link below)

 ·    Installing lights (motion detection style) can be particularly effective.  Home security systems can also be a deterrent.

 ·    If you EVER see anything suspicious, out of place, or out of the ordinary in our neighborhood, contact the Roanoke County Policy Department.

                  o   Emergency number = 911

o   Non-emergency number = 562-3265

o   Officer Eric Orange = 777-8651

WEDNESDAY, JULY 15- UPDATE!!!- CAR BREAK-INS REPORTED IN CHEROKEE HILLS

Since last week, nine (9) Cherokee Hills residents have reported a car break-in, and these break-ins have occurred primarily along Sundance Road and Cherokee Hills Drive.  In almost all cases something was stolen out of the car (cash, computer, GPS, and other types of personal property).

We strongly urge all Cherokee Hills residents to turn exterior lights on at night, to lock car doors and secure all personal property, and to report anything suspicious to the police department.

If your instincts say that something doesn't look right, report it!  For example, one resident noticed a small black car with low rims and a loud muffler driving slowly through the neighborhood.

It's also important to know that our neighborhood is currently being patrolled more heavily by the police department.

We'll continue to post updates to the CHCA web page as more information becomes available. Please tell your neighbors about this important development in our community, particularly those who may not be included on the the CHCA email list.

Thank you!

If you know of any Cherokee Hills or The Oaks residents who would like to be added to the CHCA email list, please ask them to contact Barry at bgarst@vt.edu.

FRIDAY, JULY 10- CAR BREAK-IN REPORTED IN CHEROKEE HILLS

A Cherokee Hills resident's car was broken into this week (off Cherokee Hills Drive) and a GPS untit was stolen from the car.  In addition, we have received information that theft and break-ins have occured in the Glenvar Heights neighborhood.  Please be sure to secure all of your personal property and report suspicious activity to the police department.

THURSDAY, JUNE 25- BEAR SPOTTED ON SUNDANCE ROAD

On Wednesday, June 24, a black bear was spotted on Sundance Road eating mulberries from a tree.  Cherokee Hills residents should use caution when walking in the morning and evening.  Residents are advised to contact Roanoke County Animal Control at 561-8040 if you see a bear in the neighborhood and have concerns.

PERFECT WEATHER AND GREAT FOOD CONTRIBUTE TO AN OUTSTANDING TURN-OUT FOR THE CHCA PARTY-IN-THE-PARK AND ANNUAL MEETING ON JUNE 7

On June 7, the Cherokee Hills Community Association conducted its annual Party-In-The-Park, a once-a-year event combining a picnic, children's activities, and the Annual Meeting of the association.

Approximately 60 residents of the Cherokee Hills and The Oaks neighborhoods enjoyed the festivities, which included an "moon-walk," kick-ball, hot-dogs on the grill, and the potluck picnic.  (See pictures below)

Stephanie Butler, CHCA Secretary, coordinated this year's event and we appreciate all of her hard work.    Special thanks to Charlie Wells for providing his grill for the hot dogs AND for doing most of the cooking.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this year's event.  If you weren't able to attend, add a placeholder to your June 2010 calendar.  We hope you can join us next year.
